Welcome to Outdoor Ventures
Your First African Safari!
-By Ron Young of Expeditions by Ron

First-time visitors to Africa often overload on luggage, clothes and equipment. We can provide you with a list of what you'll need. For example: when you're hunting, shuffling around for the right rifle each time a different type of game comes along, just isn't a good idea. We suggest you take along a .375 H&H Magnum. It's by far the most popular. With good reason; it's big enough for Big Game - like elephant - and can also be used on smaller game, when loaded with solids. In many areas of Africa, a .375 is mandated by law when you're going after any of the Big Five. Certainly, it's something you want to check on before you go. On the subject of equipment: Indispensable for a Photographic Safari, cameras are an important part of the hunting trip. We recommend you take along two - one with a zoom lens and one with a wide-angle lens. Also, if you drop one in the excitement, you have a backup. Many of our clients are also taking along video minicams these days. Without exception, take along PLENTY of film and batteries. Not only will you find your self taking more pictures than you ever dreamed, there are some parts of Africa where these items are very difficult to get. Be sure to check with us on the subject of what and where you may take pictures. There are restricted areas in some countries. AMONG THE MANY MISCONCEPTIONS about Africa (political issues aside), are those regarding snakes. People who have seen only the Hollywood version of the Dark Continent

always ask us about this. We try to send our clients at the time of year when the weather is the best and most snakes are in hibernation. That's also when hunting is at its peak. Very seldom have we known any client to run into a snake. Remember too, the majority of snakes (anywhere) are just as happy to get away from you as you are from them. Another major misconception is that you must have a long and exhaustive series of inoculations, vaccinations, and immunizations before you go to Africa. Contrary to what you may believe, no shots whatsoever are required in many places in Africa. Expeditions will advise you, however, of the legalities involved and what is necessary. THERE IS DANGER IN AFRICA - when you're out hunting. All animals you see are wild. That's why we send our hunting clients with Professionals who know the game and who have experience and expertise to handle most nearly any situation. More people have had more close calls with the African Lion. Its reputation for being dangerous is far above the number two animal - Cape Buffalo, Leopards rate third and elephant forth. Let's say you booked your hunt early; got your paperwork in order, packed your bags and then you get sick and can't go! All is not lost - IF you've taken out Cancellation Insurance. Expeditions can help you decide on how much and the other details.
